Celibacy as a Sign of Sucess

The Shakers can be called one of the most successful intentional communities, despite their celibate lifestyle. To not have children, one might think that a community would quickly dissolve from a lack of descendants. However I believe the Shakers were successful because their celibacy contributed to their extraordinary work ethic. By removing sex from their lifestyle, the Shakers freed up more time and people to work. Women have more of a role in their society since they do not become pregnant. Sex neither occupies Shaker thoughts or time and as a result the time spent is more valuable in achieving a higher quality of life.
Celibacy can even be viewed as a sign of a successful lifestyle. If the present truly satisfies someone then there is no need for sex or children.  Recreational sex is an indulgence in carnal desires and is present in all imperfect societies. It offers nothing but momentary satisfaction. Sex for the sake of procreation is in fact, not necessary if your society functions properly. If a community is prosperous they will attract the attention of outside communities. If a community is superior to another then people will join it. Internal growth is not necessary because a community that truly prospers does not need it.
