After learning about the Zoars they
didn't really seem to be a group of people that should be known in history.
What is so special about them and why do they get the attention that they do? The
Zoars seem to just be people that came along and did what they had to do to
survive. It is almost as if they were from a long time ago and didn't do things
based off their own beliefs. The only thing that really seemed to be different was
their communal living style.
Although
the village was really run down and didn't seem like the best place to live,
they worked as a community to get done what had to be done. In the morning the
people would meet and each would get assigned their job and get their assigned
food. For examples: the milk and the bread. The women who made the milk would
put the milk in tin buckets. Each bucket had a number on it which corresponded
to the house numbers. Each morning someone from the house would stop by the
dairy and pick up their bucket with their house number on it. The bread works
the same way. The baker would see the house number on the bread cloth and know
how many people were in that house and put the right amount of bread in the
cloth and it would then be picked up. Everybody worked together to help
everyone get what they needed. They are sort of like a mix between the Amish
and the Shakers. They have strong beliefs and are religious but at the same
time aren’t very strict.
