What is Utopia?

No matter how long it is talked about in class or how we define Utopia, I think the conversation can go on forever about whether a society is Utopian or not. Is a Utopia a good thing? This can be answered depending on the definition of your Utopia. My idea of a Utopia is a place that is imagined to be perfect. It may not be perfect but there may be a desire to be. It may also just be a better place than others since it’s hard to actually be perfect.  This place can act as a model. But what is perfection? It can’t really be perfect but may be as perfect as it’s going to get. There will always be conflict. Perfect can’t possibly exist since it is a place where you can’t make anything better. There is always room for progress.  It can be a good thing because it can always be good to make things better. A lot of people are aiming for progress. It can also be a bad thing/different thing because there might not be a lot of flexibility or freedom in what you do or in who you are…there’s not much difference between people. If everyone is aiming to make everything in a society perfect everyone must act the same.  Everything’s kind of the same. It’s not a very diverse.  One idea of perfection may not be the same idea of perfection to another so it’s not necessarily “perfect” so it’s really not all that great. You need conflict to generate progress so this place can’t really get better.
