My impressions after this
overnight experience changed my initial thoughts. To start, what surprised me
was that they aren't as quiet and shy as I thought they were. During silences
they always seemed to have something to say and if not they would laugh or
smile to make us feel comfortable. They also had a great sense of humor and
knew how to have fun. For example, we played a game where we stood in a circle
and passed a pillow and whoever had the pillow when the timer went off had to
put on an unknown piece of clothing from a bag which was very fun and funny. We
also played catch phrase and had to guess the word that someone else was
describing. They often came up with a sarcastic and funny answer. Adding on to
that note, when it came to activity around the house and down time they were
very lenient and weren't as strict as I thought they would be. What seemed to
surprise everyone was that they had gas lights of some sort and lamps connected
to car batteries. We thought there would only be candles and fires and that the
house would be freezing at night when we slept but it ended up being warmer
than our own houses. What surprised me
the most was that the food was delicious. I thought it was going to be gross
and mainly home grown. The best was the homemade apple sauce and potatoes with
cheese and bacon that we had for dinner. At first I was scared about staying
overnight in an Amish home but now I wish the stay would have been longer.
