I think that in War with the Newts,
the fact that males do not play a vital part in reproduction is a sign that
humans will not be able to stop the reproduction of the newts. Even if only one male newt is in the wild, he
has the potential to fertilize the females.
It shows that no matter how hard humans try, they will never be in
control.
Another example of humans trying too hard is The Salamander Syndicate. Bondy and the other board members start The Salamander Syndicate to control the market with regards to the Newts. I think that the author will have the Syndicate fail as a second example to show that humans are not in control.

I think that the author made Van
Toch and the Newts mirror what happens with an intentional community. Van Toch is the leader, and like the Zoar,
when the leader dies the community cannot survive. In the same way that the Zoarites disbanded,
order among the Newts will be lost.
